The grassy area in your garden is used for a number of things. Aesthetically, your garden
landscape design is likely to revolve around the lawn, with hedges, flowers and pathways acting as a perimeter. From a practical perspective, it is used for anything from kid’s games and sports, to laying down and soaking up the Sydney sun.
But, how do you ensure that your lawn stays well maintained, healthy and green throughout the year? Follow this quick and simple guide to lawn care.
How do I maintain my lawn?
- Cut your grass at the correct height
- Mow your lawn often
- Water the grass well
- Fertilise
Cut your grass at the correct height
Follow the ‘one-third’ rule. You should never remove more than one third of a piece of grass. Just like all plants and flowers that photosynthesize through their leaves, grass needs sunlight to stay healthy. If too much grass leaf is removed, it loses available surface area to soak up the sunlight.
Our garden maintenance experts therefore follow the simple ‘one third’ rule to determine whether the lawn is ready for a cut.
Mow often
In keeping with the previous point, you can use the one third method to determine whether the lawn needs mowing. Once the lawn gets to a suitable height, do not hesitate to cut it.
Regular mowing encourages the grass leaf to grow thicker and stronger. The stronger the lawn is, the less issues you will have during the Winter months. The frequency will vary between the hotter and colder months of the year, with Summer often needing one cut per week and Winter only one cut per month.
Watering
The most important factor in
garden care – While the grass leaf needs sunlight, the roots need water. When watering the lawn, you are looking to achieve a moisture depth of 7-10cm. This, in theory, allows the top layer of soil to dry out, encouraging the root to descend into the soil further to locate moisture. The deeper the root, the stronger the blade of grass.
Based on this, you should opt for deeper, more intense watering at fewer intervals.
Fertilise your lawn
Your grass leaves are taking sunlight and the roots are taking in water, but you still need to feed your lawn. Using fertiliser, particularly over the Winter months, encourages the grass to maintain its strength and keeps it looking luscious and green throughout the year.
Fertilise the lawn in a controlled 6-9 month cycle, with boosts during the Spring to encourage maximum growth, and Autumn to build your soil profile for the Winter months.
